Jessica Dorrell Resigns from University of Arkansas Amid Controversy

FAYETTEVILLE, AR – Jessica Dorrell officially resigned from her position at the University of Arkansas on Tuesday, just five days after being placed on paid administrative leave. Her resignation follows revelations of an inappropriate relationship with former head football coach Bobby Petrino, who was involved in a motorcycle accident on April 1.

Petrino appointed Dorrell as the student-athlete development coordinator from a pool of 159 applicants, a choice that has come under scrutiny given that many candidates were reportedly more qualified. Importantly, he did not disclose their relationship during the hiring process, which ultimately led to his dismissal last Tuesday.

Arkansas athletics director Jeff Long commented, “While Ms. Dorrell had a legitimate right to apply for and accept a position within the football program, the circumstances surrounding the former coach’s decision to hire her compromised her ability to be effective in such a position.” He expressed support for Dorrell’s decision to move on, emphasizing the need for effective leadership within the program.

As part of her exit, Dorrell received a $14,000 settlement. Meanwhile, university officials confirmed that there are no immediate plans to reopen her position. Their current focus lies on selecting a new head football coach or determining whether to appoint an interim coach for the upcoming 2012 season.

In the interim, assistant head coach Taver Johnson has stepped in as the team’s interim coach through the spring football sessions. The unfolding events have placed considerable spotlight on the athletic department as it navigates this challenging transition.
