Press Release: Dual Citizen Arrested for Attempted Attack on US Embassy in Tel Aviv
A dual US and German citizen, Joseph Neumeyer, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to firebomb the US Embassy branch office in Tel Aviv, federal prosecutors in New York report. Neumeyer, 28, approached the embassy on May 19 armed with Molotov cocktails concealed in a backpack. During an encounter with a security guard, he fled the scene, abandoning the backpack, which led law enforcement to track him down in a nearby hotel.
Following his arrest, Israeli officials deported Neumeyer to New York, where he appeared in court on Sunday. The unsealed criminal complaint reveals that Neumeyer had made several threatening social media posts and travelled from the US to Canada before arriving in Israel in late April.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the gravity of Neumeyer’s actions, stating, “This defendant is charged with planning a devastating attack targeting our embassy in Israel, threatening death to Americans, and [US] President [Donald] Trump’s life.” Bondi assured the public that the Department of Justice would pursue full legal accountability for such violent acts.
This incident occurs amidst a prolonged conflict in Gaza, which has led to significant casualties and humanitarian crises. Reports indicate that nearly 54,000 Palestinians have died due to the ongoing hostilities, exacerbated by a strict blockade limiting essential supplies.
Neumeyer’s court-appointed attorney, Jeff Dahlberg, has not commented on the case. The incident underscores the growing tensions surrounding the region and the implications of political decisions regarding Jerusalem’s status.
