Press Release: Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge Rescues Big Cats from Legal Quagmire
LITTLE ROCK, AR – In an extraordinary rescue that echoes a Hollywood thriller, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) from Arkansas has successfully intervened in the housing of 16 restricted species, including big cats, at a California facility lacking the necessary permits.
Scott Smith, Vice President of TCWR, described the operation as akin to a "witness protection case" due to ongoing legal proceedings related to a man who fled with animals after they were confiscated by state and federal authorities. While some animals were taken to a second facility—also unlicensed—their care was deemed adequate, prompting TCWR’s involvement.
Smith explained, “The bad guy on the run dropped him off at a place with good people,” highlighting the animals’ well-being during their interim stay.
Collaborating with California Fish and Wildlife and the USDA, TCWR embarked on a journey spanning over 30 hours to secure these big cats. Ultimately, they rescued eight, with other animals placed in reputable sanctuaries. During the emotional rescue, Smith emphasized the joy of providing these animals with a better quality of life. “It feels great to know that they’ll adapt to a life they’ve never had the chance to enjoy before.”
Despite a demanding schedule that saw Smith drive over 12,000 miles in just a month, TCWR is temporarily halting new rescues to ensure their current residents enjoy ample space.
TCWR’s mission extends globally, addressing cases in locations such as Ukraine and Honduras. Smith raised concerns over the rising trend of middle-class families in stable economies acquiring exotic animals.
As the rescued big cats settle into their new sanctuary, they can expect a life filled with leisure, complete with swimming pools and toys, all thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge team.
