Foundations of Excellence: Artistic Director Steve H. Broadnax III Enthusiastically Discusses The Rep’s 2025 Season

Arkansas Repertory Theatre Welcomes New Artistic Director Steve H. Broadnax III with a Diverse Summer Season

Little Rock, AR – The Arkansas Repertory Theatre (The Rep) has officially welcomed Steve H. Broadnax III as its permanent artistic director, succeeding Ken-Matt Martin. A proud native of Little Rock and a Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School alumnus, Broadnax brings a wealth of experience, including directing the groundbreaking Broadway production of “Thoughts of a Colored Man” and acclaimed works at The Rep like “Marie & Rosetta” and “Native Gardens.”

Kicking off its 2025 season, The Rep is showcasing Broadnax’s new play, “Me and the Devil,” running until June 8. Dubbed a “play with music,” it intertwines blues songs with a narrative rooted in the folklore of Arkansas’s Robert Johnson, famous for allegedly selling his soul to become the greatest bluesman. This world premiere explores themes of destiny and divine order, creating a "love letter to the South,” according to Broadnax.

Broadnax elaborated on the differences between a musical and a play with music, noting the latter’s ability to convey mood and emotion without strictly advancing the plot through song. He expressed excitement about working with a talented cast, including Dyllón Burnside, David Lyve, and Shayna Small.

This summer, The Rep will also feature a variety of productions, including the Tony Award-winning comedy “God of Carnage,” the classic musical “Hair,” and James Baldwin’s “Amen Corner,” which will involve local choirs. As it prepares for its 50th anniversary in 2026, The Rep aims to honor its history while introducing compelling narratives that highlight Arkansas’s rich cultural legacy.

Tickets for “Me and the Devil” and upcoming shows are available now, promising an exciting season ahead at The Rep.
