Search Intensifies for Escaped Convicted Murderer
Authorities continue their efforts to locate Grant Hardin, a former police chief convicted of murder and rape, who escaped from the North Central Unit prison in Calico Rock, Arkansas, on Sunday afternoon. As of Wednesday, Arkansas Department of Corrections spokesman Rand Champion stated that there are no significant updates on Hardin’s whereabouts, although officials remain "fairly confident" he is still in the vicinity.
Hardin, 56, escaped around 2:55 p.m. while wearing an outfit mimicking law enforcement attire. Initial accounts suggested he escaped at 3:40 p.m. Since then, search efforts have been complicated by the rugged terrain and recent rains that have diminished scent-tracking capabilities for K-9 units. Champion noted that search teams are utilizing drones and aircraft to enhance their efforts.
The search area has widened, with numerous tips reported, yet none have led to significant breakthroughs. Champion advised the public against approaching Hardin, given his violent background, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the situation. Law enforcement agencies, including local sheriff’s offices and federal agencies like the FBI and U.S. Marshals, have joined in round-the-clock search efforts.
Hardin’s criminal history is severe; he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in 2017 after killing 59-year-old James Appleton and was also implicated in the 1997 rape of an elementary school teacher. He now faces additional charges of second-degree escape, which could lead to a maximum of 20 years in prison.
The Arkansas Board of Corrections is scheduled to meet via Zoom Thursday morning to discuss ongoing operations amid the search. Champion reiterated that managing the correctional system remains a priority while dealing with this escape incident.
