Also the host of the biweekly podcast "Southern Fried," Nelson has consistently engaged with Arkansas’s diverse issues while enriching the local media landscape.

After earning his degree from Ouachita Baptist University in 1981, Nelson began his career as a sportswriter for the Arkansas Democrat for one year. He quickly made a mark, becoming the youngest editor of a daily newspaper in the state while at the helm of the Daily Siftings Herald in Arkadelphia at just 23. His journey in broadcasting continued as the news and sports director for KVRC-KDEL from 1983 to 1985.

His notable return to the Democrat came in 1985 as assistant sports editor. By 1989, he transitioned to Washington D.C. as the paper’s correspondent, gaining significant political insight that would later inform his work. In 1992, he became the Democrat-Gazette’s first political editor before joining the administration of then-Governor Mike Huckabee in 1996.

Nelson’s trajectory also included serving under President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2009. He continued contributing to Arkansas’s narrative through various roles in organizations such as the Communications Group and Simmons First National Corp.

Throughout his career, Nelson has remained a prominent voice in journalism, analyzing Arkansas’s political and cultural landscape with depth and perspective, earning him respect and recognition across the state. As he continues his work at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, his commitment to impactful storytelling remains unwavering.
