SEC Leaders Consider Future of College Football Playoff at Spring Meetings
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. — University of Arkansas Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek is at the forefront of discussions regarding potential changes to the College Football Playoff (CFP) format during the SEC’s annual spring meetings. As administrators evaluate models for an expanded playoff starting in 2026, two primary proposals have emerged: the "4-4-2-2-1" model, allocating four automatic qualifiers each to the SEC and Big Ten, two to the ACC and Big 12, one for a non-Power Four team, and three at-large bids; and the "5+11" model that grants automatic bids to the top five conference champions along with 11 at-larges.
Yurachek acknowledged the complexity of balancing institutional interests while considering the best options for college football overall, emphasizing the difficulty of separating his roles at the University of Arkansas from his position in the SEC. His unique perspective stems from serving on the playoff selection committee, giving him insight into the factors at play in these discussions.
SEC leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with past playoff seedings, particularly regarding how three-loss teams such as Alabama and Ole Miss were excluded. This concern has prompted calls for a reconsideration of how teams are selected and evaluated, with some leaders questioning the efficacy of a selection committee. Yurachek, however, defended the committee’s integrity, arguing it operates effectively and is capable of making the right decisions.
