AFRY to Assist GBP with Arkansas Paper Mill Modernization Initiative

Green Bay Packaging Partners with AFRY for Major Modernisation of Arkansas Paper Mill

Green Bay Packaging (GBP), a prominent American pulp and paper company, has announced a significant partnership with engineering firm AFRY to modernise its paper mill located in Morrilton, Arkansas. This multiyear project aims to enhance the mill’s operational efficiency while upgrading critical infrastructure components.

The undertaking involves comprehensive design engineering, procurement support, and commissioning for various plant elements, notably the recovery and biomass boiler systems. A pivotal aspect of the modernisation includes the installation of an electric turbine generator, aligning with GBP’s decarbonisation strategy to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Brad Harville, Vice President and General Manager of GBP’s Arkansas Kraft Division, emphasised the importance of investing in future technologies to maintain the company’s leadership in innovation and excellence. He expressed confidence in AFRY’s capability, citing their extensive experience in large-scale pulp and paper projects.

In addition to technical upgrades, GBP is expanding its footprint by procuring roughly 300 acres of land to support future growth and investments, ensuring long-term operational viability for the mill. AFRY has been involved from the planning stages, contributing to conceptual studies and preliminary engineering.

John Boettcher, Head of Process Industries USA at AFRY, remarked on the firm’s commitment to sustainability and its strategic partnership with GBP to aid in the transition toward more sustainable practices in the industry. With their global expertise and local presence, AFRY aims to deliver top-tier solutions for GBP.

This modernisation endeavor, which officially began in December 2024, is poised to transform the Morrilton mill into a more sustainable and efficient facility, reinforcing GBP’s status as an industry leader.
