At Geng Xiaoyun’s restaurant in Beijing, Kunyuan, a popular dish of salt-baked chicken feet, known as “phoenix talons,” has been removed from the menu due to a significant price increase of 30% following tariffs on American imports. Geng notes that American chicken feet have superior quality and taste compared to alternatives from Brazil and Russia, and he hopes to reinstate them once the prices stabilize, contingent on the political climate improving.

Tensions between the U.S. and China threaten a 90-day tariff pause agreed upon in May, with both countries accusing each other of violating terms. Recent actions, such as U.S. export controls on AI chips, have led China to counter President Trump’s claims, indicating that the agreement is under strain.

As a result of these tariffs, American agricultural products are disappearing from Chinese markets and restaurants, further impacted by rising prices. At Home Plate, a Beijing eatery known for its American barbecue, American beef has been replaced by imports from Australia, which enjoy zero duties under the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement.

Liu Li, a long-time beef supplier, highlighted that U.S. beef prices have increased by 50% due to tariffs, affecting demand. He lamented the costly situation, stating that while U.S. beef is preferred for its flavor and quality, the steep prices make it less accessible in the current trade war context. As the situation develops, it remains uncertain how the market for American imports in China will change.
