Celebrating the Life of Annebelle Machen: A Beloved Educator and Friend
Hot Springs, Arkansas – Elizabeth Ann "Annebelle" Machen, 95, passed away peacefully at her home on May 21, 2025. Born on April 22, 1930, in Crossett, Arkansas, she was raised as an only child in Portland, where she graduated from Portland High School. Annebelle earned her degree in physical education at Hendrix College in 1951 and began her long and dedicated career in education shortly after.
Over the years, she served in various public schools across Arkansas, eventually becoming an instructor of physical education at Arkansas State Teachers’ College (now University of Central Arkansas) in 1959. She was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1975, where she taught thousands of students and managed one of the heaviest academic advising loads in the department until her retirement in 1995.
Annebelle was actively involved in campus life, serving as an advisor to several clubs, including the Women’s Recreational Association and the UCA Cheerleaders. Many of her students maintained close ties with her long after graduation, a testament to her impact as an educator.
Beyond her professional life, Annebelle was an avid reader and a sports enthusiast, particularly passionate about Arkansas athletics. She cherished her friendships and was especially close to a group she lovingly referred to as her "Fabulous Five," who were with her during her final days.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 10, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Hot Springs, with interment planned at Portland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portland Cemetery Fund or Samaritan Ministries of Hot Springs. Annebelle’s friends extend gratitude to all who provided love and support during her life.
