WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a pivotal hearing titled "AI in the Everyday: Current Application and Future Frontiers in Communications and Technology," Congressman Richard Hudson (NC-09), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, emphasized the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and its ubiquitous role in daily life.
Hudson kicked off the session by discussing AI’s significant advancements, particularly in areas like large language models and generative AI. He underscored that while AI applications have been integrated into various industries for years, recent innovations have transformed the way we live and work.
"Almost everyone uses AI in our daily lives," Hudson noted, providing examples such as AI-driven navigation in rideshare services and content recommendations in entertainment. He highlighted the NFL’s use of AI in creating optimized game schedules to enhance player travel efficiency and fan access.
As demand for AI surges, Hudson stressed the critical need for robust infrastructure to support this growth. He projected significant increases in data storage capacity and energy consumption by 2030, necessitating advancements in fiber optic and wireless technologies to fully harness AI’s potential.
Citing global competition in AI development, particularly from China’s DeepSeek AI model, Hudson warned that maintaining U.S. leadership in technology is paramount. "We must foster an environment where AI companies can innovate and excel globally," he asserted, drawing parallels to the regulatory approach that helped the internet thrive.
The hearing aimed to address the implications of AI across telecommunications and media sectors, as well as explore ways Congress can partner in ensuring the U.S. remains at the forefront of AI development. Hudson concluded by signaling his anticipation for insights from witnesses about AI’s ongoing impact and future challenges.
