Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum Marks Two Decades of Excellence

Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum Celebrates 20 Years of Preserving Naval History

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — This week marks a significant milestone for the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary since opening its doors in 2003. This landmark event coincides with the arrival of the USS Razorback, a submarine that once served in the Turkish Navy from 1971 until 2001, and was brought to the Arkansas River through the dedicated efforts of local veterans, volunteers, and former Mayor Patrick Henry.

Curator John Hoganson emphasizes the museum’s unique historical significance, stating, “The Razorback here was present for the very end of World War II, for the Tokyo Bay surrender ceremony, and the USS Hoga was present in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.” This distinction makes the museum the only place in the continental United States where visitors can explore the "bookends" of World War II, with the Hoga representing the war’s beginning and the Razorback representing its conclusion.

To commemorate two decades of educating the public about naval history, the museum is hosting a week-long celebration that began on Wednesday and runs until June 8. Visitors can look forward to special events and exhibitions that highlight the military heritage encapsulated within the museum’s exhibits.

The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum not only showcases these historical artifacts but also serves to honor the brave men and women who served in the Navy, ensuring that their stories and contributions are preserved for future generations. The public is invited to join in the festivities to celebrate this cornerstone of naval history in the heart of Arkansas.
