Authorities are in the midst of a massive manhunt for Vance Boelter, the suspect in two politically motivated shootings that resulted in the deaths of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the serious injury of State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who remain hospitalized. Allegedly impersonating law enforcement, Boelter gained entry to the victims’ homes. Photos believed to show him include one of a man dressed similarly to law enforcement and another in a cowboy hat.
The 57-year-old Boelter, described as 6-foot-1 with brown hair, is reportedly armed and dangerous, leading officials to issue alerts for nearby residents to secure their homes and vehicles. Authorities identified his vehicle and cowboy hat in Sibley County and advised the public not to approach him if seen. Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz characterized the attacks as politically motivated.
Boelter is married with five children and has been linked to various community and religious activities, including work in the Democratic Republic of Congo related to food supply systems. The organization Minnesota Africans United stated there was no connection between them and Boelter’s actions.
He also has experience in the funeral industry, having worked for two funeral homes while previously engaging in the food industry. A troubling last message from Boelter to a roommate indicated a state of distress and remorse over the situation. As the investigation unfolds, law enforcement is actively seeking information about Boelter, with a $50,000 reward offered for tips leading to his capture. Residents are encouraged to report any sightings immediately.
