Press Release: Healthy Lifestyle Enhances Metabolic Health Even Without Weight Loss
June 16, 2025 — An international study led by researchers from Ben-Gurion University (Israel), Harvard University (US), and Leipzig University (Germany) highlights that adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly improve metabolic health, despite some individuals not experiencing weight loss.
The research focused on “weight loss resistant” individuals—those who maintain healthy habits yet struggle with shedding pounds. Over a period of 18 to 24 months, 761 adults participated in a controlled program emphasizing dietary changes and physical activity. Each participant was provided access to gyms and exercise guidance, with a strict diet plan omitting any supplements or medications.
Remarkably, one-third of the participants did not lose weight; however, they exhibited notable improvements in metabolic health markers. These included elevated levels of “good” HDL cholesterol, decreased leptin levels (a hormone produced by fat cells), and reductions in abdominal fat, verified via MRI scans.
The findings underscore that lifestyle modifications—such as healthy eating and regular exercise—can confer substantial health advantages, diminishing the risks of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
As stated by the researchers, this study contributes valuable insights to the understanding of weight management and metabolic health, challenging the common notion that weight loss is the sole indicator of a successful health strategy.
The implications of this study encourage individuals, especially those struggling to lose weight, to persist in lifestyle modifications, reaffirming that significant health benefits may be realized regardless of the scale.
