Wehiwa Aloy Wins 2025 Golden Spikes Award
Arkansas shortstop Wehiwa Aloy has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Golden Spikes Award, recognizing him as the top amateur baseball player in the nation. Tennessee left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle and Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise were notable runner-ups for the honor.
Established in 1978 by USA Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award is bestowed annually on a player who not only showcases extraordinary on-field talent but also exemplifies commendable sportsmanship. Aloy’s accolade marks the third time in a decade that a Razorback has claimed the award, following in the footsteps of Kevin Kopps (2021) and Andrew Benintendi (2015). Impressively, he is the fifth consecutive winner from the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
“I’m just truly blessed to be able to have this award,” Aloy expressed, attributing his success to both his experience at Arkansas and the support from his hometown in Wailuku, Hawaii. His performance this season was remarkable; he boasted a .350 batting average across 65 games, hitting 21 home runs and driving in 68 runs.
Unfortunately, the Razorbacks’ season concluded disappointingly in Omaha, as they fell to LSU 6-5 in a dramatic defeat. Aloy faced criticism for a pivotal decision during the ninth inning, opting for a force-out at third base instead of attempting a double play. This miscalculation allowed LSU to tie the game and ultimately clinch the win. Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn praised Aloy’s effort, reflecting on the complexities of the situation.
Looking ahead, Aloy is projected as the No. 17 overall pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, further solidifying his promising future in professional baseball.
