Flash Floods in Texas: Death Toll Rises to 82
Kerr County, Texas – The devastating flash floods that struck central Texas have claimed at least 82 lives, with many more still missing, including ten campers from Camp Mystic. Authorities have identified 68 bodies in Kerr County, where torrents from the Guadalupe River caused catastrophic damage. Sheriff Larry Leitha reported that 28 of the deceased are children.
Governor Greg Abbott has warned of additional heavy rains expected to continue through Tuesday, raising concerns about further flooding. Families were allowed to search through the wreckage at Camp Mystic on Sunday as rescuers, utilizing helicopters, drones, and boats, continued their grim search efforts.
The tragic incident claimed the life of Dick Eastland, the camp’s longtime owner, who died attempting to save campers. His grandson honored him, stating, “This was the only way he would die—saving the girls he loved.”
In addition to the fatalities in Kerr County, six people have died in Travis County and reports of casualties have surfaced from Burnet, Kendall, and Williamson counties. As rescue operations proceed, the Texas Division of Emergency Management is on high alert for further flooding.
Local officials have faced scrutiny regarding the lack of an emergency alarm system for flood warnings. Kerr County has struggled since 2018 to secure funding for such a system, leaving many residents without timely alerts. Despite these challenges, search volunteers remain determined, coming from around Texas to assist in locating the missing.
