Three sisters from Ohio inherited a rare dime kept in a bank vault for over 40 years, unaware of its true value until recently. The 1975 dime, missing the San Francisco Mint’s mint mark, is one of only two known to exist. The other one sold for over $450,000 in 2019. These dimes were hidden for decades, known only to serious coin collectors. The sisters’ brother and mother had purchased the first known error coin in 1978 for $18,200, seeing it as a financial safety net.
The sisters, who wish to remain anonymous, were surprised by their sudden windfall when they learned of the dime’s potential value a few years ago. The brother had kept the coin a secret until reaching out to Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections, seven years ago. Russell confirmed the dime’s rarity and suggested it could be worth over $500,000.
The dime, known as the “1975 ‘no S’ proof dime,” will be displayed at a coin show in Tampa, Florida, before a scheduled auction in October. Russell believes that there may be more examples of this rare dime out there, hidden among 1975 “proof” sets. This discovery is expected to trigger a search for these valuable coins among collectors.
