A 32-year-old man from Connecticut escaped after being held captive and starved by his stepmother for over two decades. He set their house on fire to gain his freedom. When authorities responded to the fire, they found the severely emaciated man who had not received proper care and had been subjected to abuse, neglect, and inhumane treatment. The stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, was arrested and charged with kidnapping, assault, and unlawful restraint. The man, identified as MV-1, revealed that he had been locked in a small room since the 4th grade, only being let out for short periods of time to do chores. He was given minimal food and water, and was mentally conditioned by his stepmother to keep silent about his situation. The man’s confinement intensified after his father’s death. Despite some family members noticing his condition, they did not take any action. An uncle grew concerned after observing the man’s physical state during a Christmas visit, but Sullivan prevented any communication. The man had not been to school since the 4th grade, and an inquiry in 2005 deemed the homeschooling plan sufficient. The police chief described the case as one of the worst acts of inhumanity he had witnessed in his career. Sullivan denied the allegations through her attorney, claiming that she provided food and shelter to the victim and did not restrain him.
